What to expect from a logical reasoning test at the Civil Service Fast Stream

What we know about the tests, which format this one can take and how to practise for it.

Does the Civil Service Fast Stream use logical reasoning tests?

We do not have a list of the tests the Civil Service Fast Stream sets. A logical test is a common third test, after the numerical and the verbal one. It is made of shapes only, with nothing to read and nothing to calculate.

What the Civil Service Fast Stream hiring process does have is a stage of online tests: it is stage 2 of 5. The email that invites you to it names each test, so read it before you choose what to practise. All five stages are on our page about the Civil Service Fast Stream.

Which logical test format will the Civil Service Fast Stream use?

This test goes by several names. What one publisher calls logical reasoning, another calls inductive, abstract or diagrammatic, and the questions are much alike. We do not know which publisher the Civil Service Fast Stream uses, so look for any of those names in your invitation.

Ours do not adapt: every test is a set of questions fixed in advance, which you can take with the timer or without.

  • SHL Verify Inductive

    Questions
    18 questions
    Time
    24 min

Work out the pattern in a set of images and choose the next one. The test adapts to your answers.

  • Kenexa Logical

    Questions
    24 questions
    Time
    20 min

A series of shapes with one missing. SHL has run the Kenexa tests since 2022, under the same name.

  • Talent Q Elements

    Questions
    12 questions
    Time
    About 15 min

A time limit on each question, and no way back to it. A right answer brings a harder question.

  • Cubiks Logiks

    Questions
    10 questions
    Time
    4 min

The abstract part of a 12-minute test that also has verbal and numerical parts. Cubiks is now Talogy.

These are the usual formats: an adaptive test may stop before its last question. Your invitation states the time allowed. SHL, Kenexa, Talent Q and Cubiks are trademarks of their owners, who are not connected with this site.

How do you practise for a logical test at the Civil Service Fast Stream?

Go through the figures one feature at a time: where a shape is, which way it points, how many there are, what it is, how dark it is. Put the rule into words before you look at the answers.

Start with Logical Reasoning Test 1: it is free and needs no account. Then take the logical tests in the package, first without the timer and then with it. When a question stops you, choose your best answer and go on to the next.

  • Dan Morgan, Bristol

    Revolut

Revolut ops role had a logical test. Did the inductive and diagrammatic ones here for a week. Passed first go. Decent price too.

  • Chiara

Good. Sometimes the explanation is a bit short for the harder questions but you can usually work it out from the steps given.

  • William Hartley

    DB numerical

Deutsche Bank numerical test passed. The practice tests here are a close match in difficulty and the timer got me used to the pace. Reports after each test are detailed.

  • Sana

Best numerical practice ive found and I tried 3 sites. The solutions show the quickest method not just the correct one.

  • Felix Baumann, Berlin

    BMW

Good preparation for the BMW online assessment, the numerical and inductive parts in particular. The real one had an English language section which obviously this doesn't cover. Still good.

  • Ravi Chandran, Coventry

Philips graduate programme. Inductive reasoning section is what I came for. Six inductive and six diagrammatic tests here, did each twice. Real test was the same flavour of pattern questions. Through to the next round.

No. Deductive tests are made of words, not shapes: you are given a few statements and asked what has to be true if they are. Our logical package does not cover them.
