About BP

BP Plc (until May 2001 ‘British Petroleum’) is an integrated oil and gas company that provides customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heating and lighting, lubricants to power engines and petrochemicals used to make everyday items such as paints, clothing and packaging. The company operates in two segments: Upstream and Downstream. The Upstream segment trades in natural gas, including liquefied natural gas, electricity and is also responsible for its oil and natural gas exploration activities. The Downstream segment is responsible for the refining, production, marketing, transportation, supply and sale of oil, petrochemicals and related services to wholesale and retail customers. The company was founded by William Knox D'Arcy on 14 April 1908 and is headquartered in London, UK.

BP's main divisions as of 2022:

  • Gas & low carbon energy - natural gas production, solar and wind farms, biofuel production; revenues $30.8 billion, profit $2.2 billion.
  • Oil production & operations - activities in regions with predominantly oil production; $24.5 billion in revenues, $10.5 billion in profits.
  • Customers & products - Refining, petroleum product sales, electric car charging stations; revenues $130.1 billion, profits $5.6 billion.
  • Rosneft - 20% stake and joint projects, $2.7bn profit; cooperation terminated 27 February 2022, assets written off after first quarter 2022;
  • Other businesses and corporate - this division includes maritime transport (49 own vessels and 22 leased), financial services and insurance; revenues $1.7bn, loss $2.7bn.

BP recruitment process in 2024

  1. Online application form
    • One of the first stages of the recruitment process is filling in the application form on BP Careers website.

    • The online application form is usually presented as a questionnaire with the option of importing data from a LinkedIn or CV file.

    • The applicant is required to provide information about work experience, education, skills and other necessary details.

    • There may be questions both about job preferences (e.g. desired type of employment, country and city of residence) and more personal questions (e.g. race and ethnicity, religion, disability)

  2. Phone / Video Interview
    • Successful candidates are invited for a 15-20 min. phone call.

    • Soft skills are usually assessed during this call by the BP recruiter.

    • In some cases, BP hiring manager may invite you for a video interview (most commonly conducted with HireVue.) For software engineering positions, candidates may be asked to complete a coding challenge (problems on algorithms + take-home challenges.)

  3. Online tests
    • The next stage of the BP recruitment process is an online assessment. The candidate will be sent an email invitation to complete BP tests.

    • BP uses different types of recruitment tests to assess candidates and their suitability for the position they are applying for.

    • Successful candidates are invited to visit the nearest BP headquarters or office.

    • Candidates will have a chance to personally meet the hiring manager, team leaders and seniors during the assessment day.

    • BP may organise a group exercise with candidates as part of the hiring procedure.

  5. Partner interview
    • The final stage of the recruitment process.

    • The candidate will have a chance to meet the hiring manager, department director and/or division lead.

    • Normally, there is no assessment at this stage.

    • Candidates are mostly expected to demonstrate soft skills and a desire to join BP.
