About Sky

Sky Group Limited is a British media conglomerate with operations in Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Spain in addition to the UK. Since October 2018 it has been part of the US corporation Comcast. Its core business is satellite television. It was formed in 1990 by the merger of British Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting under the name BSkyB. In 2014, the name was changed to Sky plc after expansion into Italy and Germany. As of 2018, the company had 23.6 million subscribers and is the largest satellite TV operator in the UK and Italy, third in Germany. The company owns a number of satellite TV channels, such as Sky News, Sky Sports, Sky Movies, Sky1, and Sky2.

Activities

 

Sky has a presence in four of the five largest pay-TV markets in Western Europe: the UK, Italy, Germany and Spain. Pay-TV is the company's core business and is distributed both via satellite and cable networks, predominantly by third parties, although the UK has its own. In Spain and Switzerland, services are only available via the internet. Several channels (Sky News in the UK and Ireland, Sky TG24 in Italy and Sky Sport News in Germany) are broadcast free-to-air.

The divisions are formed on a geographical basis:

  • UK & Ireland - 170 channels, 13 million subscribers, £8.9bn turnover;
  • Germany and Austria - 44 channels, 5.2 million subscribers, £2bn turnover;
  • Italy - 84 channels, 4.8 million subscribers, turnover of £2.6bn.

In the UK, the company has a virtual cellular operator, Sky Mobile, operating through the Telefónica network.

Sky recruitment process in 2024

  1. Online application form
    • One of the first stages of the recruitment process is filling in the application form on Sky Careers website.

    • The online application form is usually presented as a questionnaire with the option of importing data from a LinkedIn or CV file.

    • The applicant is required to provide information about work experience, education, skills and other necessary details.

    • There may be questions both about job preferences (e.g. desired type of employment, country and city of residence) and more personal questions (e.g. race and ethnicity, religion, disability)

  2. Online tests
    • The next stage of the Sky recruitment process is an online assessment. The candidate will be sent an email invitation to complete Sky tests.

    • Sky uses different types of recruitment tests to assess candidates and their suitability for the position they are applying for.

    • Candidates are most often asked to complete the following tests:

  3. Phone / Video Interview
    • Successful candidates are invited for a 15-20 min. phone call.

    • Soft skills are usually assessed during this call by the Sky recruiter.

    • In some cases, Sky hiring manager may invite you for a video interview (most commonly conducted with HireVue.) For software engineering positions, candidates may be asked to complete a coding challenge (problems on algorithms + take-home challenges.)

  4. Assessment centre
    • Successful candidates are invited to visit the nearest Sky headquarters or office.

    • Candidates will have a chance to personally meet the hiring manager, team leaders and seniors during the assessment day.

    • Sky may organise a group exercise with candidates as part of the hiring procedure.

  5. Partner interview
    • The final stage of the recruitment process.

    • The candidate will have a chance to meet the hiring manager, department director and/or division lead.

    • Normally, there is no assessment at this stage.

    • Candidates are mostly expected to demonstrate soft skills and a desire to join Sky.
