About General Electric

General Electric (short for GE) is an American diversified corporation producing many types of equipment, including engines, power plants (including nuclear reactors), gas turbines, aircraft engines, medical equipment, photographic equipment, household and lighting equipment, plastics and sealants, as well as a wide range of military products, from small arms and armoured vehicles to aerospace systems and nuclear warheads. About one-fifth of its product and service revenues come from US federal military orders (not including foreign orders for weapons and military equipment).

As of 2016, the company is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. H. Lawrence Culp, Jr. is the Chairman and CEO of the corporation.

As of 2022, the company has eight main divisions:

  • Power — production of gas turbines, thermal and nuclear power plant equipment and transmission lines, power plant services, motors, generators, automation and production control equipment; joint ventures with Hitachi and Toshiba to produce nuclear reactors; turnover $27.3 billion, net loss $808 million, 59,700 employees, headquarters in Schenectady.
  • Renewable Energy — manufacturing and servicing equipment for wind and hydroelectric power plants; turnover $9.53 billion, net profit $287 million, 22,900 employees, headquartered in Paris.
  • Aviation — manufacturing and servicing engines and other equipment for civil and military aviation; turnover $30.6 billion, net profit $6.47 billion, 48,000 employees, headquartered in Cincinnati.
  • Oil & Gas — 50.4% stake in Baker Hughes General Electric; manufactures equipment and services for oil and gas production; $22.9 billion in sales, $429 million in net income, 65,800 employees, operating centres in London and Houston, Texas.
  • Healthcare — manufacturing of diagnostic equipment, pharmaceuticals; turnover $19.8 billion, net profit $3.7 billion, 53,800 employees, headquartered in Chicago.
  • Transportation — production of diesel-electric locomotives as well as engines and other components for the mining and oil and gas industries; turnover $3.9bn, net profit $633m, 9,400 employees, headquartered in Chicago; sold in early 2019.
  • Lighting — production of light bulbs (mainly in the US); turnover - $1.72 billion, net profit - $70 million, 3,000 employees.
  • Finance (GE Capital) - the main component of the division is GE Capital Aviation Services, which leases aircraft (fleet of 1,850 aircraft and helicopters), also provides financial services to businesses and is engaged in insurance; turnover of $9.55 billion, net loss $489 million, 2,300 employees, headquarters in Norwalk (Connecticut).

The US accounts for 38% of revenues, followed by Europe (20%), Asia (19%), the Middle East and Africa (13%) and the rest of the Americas (10%). More than half of its assets are in the US (52%), followed by Europe (27%), Asia (8%) and the Rest of the Americas (6%). 4% of sales are attributable to US government agencies, and another 3% are defence aviation products.

General Electric recruitment process in 2024

  1. Online application form
    • One of the first stages of the recruitment process is filling in the application form on General Electric Careers website.

    • The online application form is usually presented as a questionnaire with the option of importing data from a LinkedIn or CV file.

    • The applicant is required to provide information about work experience, education, skills and other necessary details.

    • There may be questions both about job preferences (e.g. desired type of employment, country and city of residence) and more personal questions (e.g. race and ethnicity, religion, disability)

  2. Phone / Video Interview
    • Successful candidates are invited for a 15-20 min. phone call.

    • Soft skills are usually assessed during this call by the General Electric recruiter.

    • In some cases, General Electric hiring manager may invite you for a video interview (most commonly conducted with HireVue.) For software engineering positions, candidates may be asked to complete a coding challenge (problems on algorithms + take-home challenges.)

  3. Online tests
    • The next stage of the General Electric recruitment process is an online assessment. The candidate will be sent an email invitation to complete General Electric tests.

    • General Electric uses different types of recruitment tests to assess candidates and their suitability for the position they are applying for.

    • Successful candidates are invited to visit the nearest General Electric headquarters or office.

    • Candidates will have a chance to personally meet the hiring manager, team leaders and seniors during the assessment day.

    • General Electric may organise a group exercise with candidates as part of the hiring procedure.

  5. Partner interview
    • The final stage of the recruitment process.

    • The candidate will have a chance to meet the hiring manager, department director and/or division lead.

    • Normally, there is no assessment at this stage.

    • Candidates are mostly expected to demonstrate soft skills and a desire to join General Electric.
